Textile has been one of the most important industrial sectors in Pakistan in terms of economic output, investment and employment. Pakistan is the fourth Biggest grower of cotton in the world. It is the most organized industry. Manufacturing sector contributes 18% to the GDP of which 45% is textile and apparel. It has 65% share in exports and employs 38%of the labor force.
Contrary to the common belief textiles are Not only used for clothing and drapes but also as Containers such as bags and baskets. In households, they were and are used in carpeting, upholstered furnishings, and window shades, towels, covering for tables, beds, and in art too. In the workplace, they are used in industrial and scientific processes such as filtering. Miscellaneous uses include flags, backpacks, tents, nets, cleaning devices such as handkerchiefs and rags. Apart from those, goods such as balloons, kites, sails, and parachutes and composite materials such a fiberglass etc also fall in the purview of Textiles.
Clothing and textiles have been enormously important throughout human history o have their materials, production tools and techniques, cultural influences, and social significance. Traces of possible sewing needles have been dated to around 40,000 years ago. The originate from the Solitarian culture, which existed in France from 19,000 BC to 15,000 BC.
The reason behind Pakistan’s growth in the textile sector after independence is attributed to vast cotton growth. Apart from being a source of employment in the manufacturing sector, cotton cultivation provides occupation to 1.5 million farming families (Out of 5 million) who cultivate cotton over 15% of the cultivable area in the country. Cotton accounts for 8.6% of value addition in agriculture and about 1.9% in GDP. It provides raw material to458 textile mills, more than 1200 ginning factories.
